Introduction to XHTML

Introduction

This lesson is aimed to provide a brief introduction into XHTML for people who have no prior knowledge of web design or XHTML.

So what is XHTML?

XHTML is a merging of two seperate technologies HTML and XML and is commonly used to construct web pages.

What is HTML?

HTML was created by Tim Berners-Lee in 1991 as  a way for scientists to share data.  As the world wide web started to take shape HTML was used by people outside of the scientific community to design web pages.  The reason being is that HTML can be created in a simple text editor such as Notepad by using markup tags which enable a web browser to display the file correctly.

What is XML?

XML is used to create custom markup languages.

Why use XHTML?

Although XHTML is very similar to HTML it has many advantages which are not in the scope of this lesson.  At this point in time it is best to think XHTML as clearer and more concise than HTML.

What company owns XHTML?

The World Wide Web Consortium publish the standards for XHTML but it is not owned by a particular company.

What tools are needed to make XHTML files?

The only tools that are required are:

- Operating system
- Text editor
- Web browser

How hard is it to create XHTML files?

Creating web pages can become easy with practice and the next lesson will show you how to create a simple web page using the tools already listed.

I found a great online html course from the University of Washington, continuing ed (extension). It’s a self paced tutorial, but well written with web based quizzes: http://www.outreach.washington.edu/openuw/asp/transform.asp?course=Htmlbasics&xml=htmlbasics_intro1
